I have been working on nonfiction text features with my 3rd graders to get them ready for ISTEP and IREAD. I found these scavenger hunt FREEBIES on TpT:

The kiddos really enjoyed the activity. They were able to pick a nonfiction book to use. I had some old reading series guided reading books that I pulled. The students picked a book and listed all the text features they could find (title, index, glossary, etc.).

Word Rods with 2nd Grade - Long i

Long i Connect 4 Game with 2nd Grade

My 2nd grade students really enjoyed the Connect 4 game using Long i words. They had to roll the cube and then say the word. The first person to get 4 in a row wins.

Long i Word Sort with 2nd Grade

I had students sort words with the long i sound (igh, i, or y). I wrote the words on small cards and had students sort them.

 

A Day in the Life of a Reading Specialist

I've been working as a Reading Specialist since August and I LOVE it! I love my job and I love working with different ages. Don't get me wrong, I loved teaching 3rd grade, did it for 7 years, but there is fun in teaching different age groups. Each age is special.

Occasionally we'll have a delay, which changes things a bit. I stay busy all day. I work with some great kiddos so it makes it easy!
